Colors were flying as the summer adult group created art with the purpose of extending hope to the young.

An exhibition of art created by an adult class will be auctioned for the benefit of Monarch School, San Diego’s only K-12 public school for children impacted by homelessness.  Monarch is the largest and most comprehensive school of its kind in the U.S. and serves as a model for how a community can successfully educate homeless children to become productive citizens.

The six-week summer course, taught by Susan E. Roden at UC San Diego Extension, gave a basic introduction to soft pastels.  With a great diversity in technique and substrates, Roden employed communal class projects for a broader exposure to the medium. 

The communal art will be available and on exhibit October 10th through December 1st at Ray Street Custom Framing & Gallery in North Park. Many of the artists will be in attendance at two (2) public receptions, which will be held on Saturday, October 13th and Saturday, November 10th from 6 to 9 pm and concurrent with Ray-At-Night, a monthly art walk.

All proceeds from the silent auction and a raffle will benefit Monarch School, which helps more than 400 students annually through a unique public-private partnership: The San Diego County Office of Education provides the curricular and educational foundation, while the non-profit Monarch School Project provides food and clothing, medical and dental care, transportation, basic family assistance and other special programs and services crucial to the successful academic and personal growth of children impacted by homelessness.

Artists from FIG create visual and critical responses to artworks by adults with developmental disabilities of St. Madeleine Sophie’s Center. “Inspire/Respond” challenges partners to expand artistic horizons and methods, honoring the traditions of outsider art. Artworks are displayed together in this exciting exhibition at Workshop on Ray Street in the North Park Arts District.

About FIG: The Feminist Image Group was formed in 2009. FIG is a coalition of visual artists who meet to discuss art, see exhibitions, and support one another’s careers. Artists work across many media, including drawing, painting, photography, sculpture, installation, digital media and performance.

As artists, FIG is concerned with how women continue to be portrayed in the art world. As teachers and feminists, they encourage students and colleagues to be alert to sexism in its many forms. FIG promotes an inclusive worldview that allows all voices. Previous exhibitions include “Women by Women” at the San Diego Art Department, 2010, and “What Women Want” at the Lyceum Theater Gallery, 2011, and “Feeder” at 4141 Garage, 2012.
